Our family-owned company uses reclaimed timbers that were hand-hewn over a century ago from virgin forests. Back then, our forefathers had the pick of the forest, and they chose the biggest, strongest trees for their homesteads.
Superior to new, hastily-grown logs, Walden's antique logs are naturally insect-resistant (one of the properties of heart wood), and they finished settling a while back. About a century and a half ago, as a rule.
Hewn from the heartwood of Poplars, Oaks, Chestnuts, Long Leaf Pine and Hemlocks, the dense square-cut logs have a character that cannot be imitated. Authentic adz marks made by a foot adz, the long-handled axe that was originally used to cut away the bark and soft sap wood, are visible on the logs. Original mortise pockets, wooden pegs and the rare initials and 19th century date are all preserved, and reverred at Walden Log Homes. Such authentic character cannot be replicated in a factory.
