The Summer Beam

The summer beam has nothing to do with summer. It is a term for 'a major and usually massive horizontal timber which spans the girts or plate'. It is the epitome of 'load-bearing' and is derived from the word 'sommier', which is French for beast of burden. Makes sense now.

This magnificent summer beam was hewn by hand over one hundred years ago, as are all the reclaimed timbers Walden uses.
